Foot Pain Q & A
What is foot pain?
Foot pain is any discomfort in your foot, including your toes, ball of your foot, arch, heel, midfoot, and other areas. Because there are so many causes of foot pain, you may experience the discomfort in certain ways or at specific times. For example, people with plantar fasciitis commonly have heel pain first thing in the morning.
What causes foot pain?
Foot pain can occur because of injuries, overuse, disease, infections, deformities, and other reasons. Some of the most common reasons for foot pain are:
- Arthritis
- Gout
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Neuromas
- Bunions
- Hammertoes
- Fractures
- Foot ulcers
- Bone spurs
- Plantar fasciitis
- Flatfoot
- Ingrown toenails
- Corns and calluses
- Sprains and strains
- Plantar warts
It's relatively common to have two or more reasons for foot pain at one time. For example, bunions and hammertoe frequently occur together. And, many people with diabetes experience both neuropathy and poor circulation, which can lead to foot ulcers.
When should I see the doctor about foot pain?
If foot pain starts after a sports injury or other accident, seek help at Volusia County Podiatry right away. You need immediate help if your foot pain occurs along with infection symptoms like red or arm skin or if you have severe swelling.
If you have mild foot pain that increases instead of receding, or if your foot pain interferes with your usual activities, call the office to book an appointment as soon as possible.
How is the cause of foot pain diagnosed?
Dr. Duffus examines your foot and asks questions about your symptoms to determine whether you need testing. If she suspects a particular problem, she may perform diagnostic tests like an X-ray, nerve conduction study, or vascular ultrasound.
In some cases, Dr. Duffus may recommend a more detailed imaging exam like an MRI or CT scan.
With a firm diagnosis in place, Dr. Duffus can personalize a foot treatment plan that targets the source of your discomfort.
Your treatment plan may include nonsurgical approaches like compression bandages, taping, custom orthotics, in-office treatments, and foot exercises. Or, for severe foot damage, you may need reconstructive foot surgery.
If you have foot pain that just won't stop, Dr. Duffus can help. Call Volusia County Podiatry or book an appointment online today.
